conceptGlucosamine
Glucosamine is an endogenous aminomonosaccharide synthesized from glucose naturally in the body.61 It is used in the biosynthesis of proteoglycans and glycosaminoglycans, which are the building blocks of cartilage.61 The lack of proteoglycans can lead to degeneration of articular cartilage.62 In vitro and animal studies showed that glucosamine affects the cytokine-mediated pathways regulating inflammation, cartilage degradation, and immune responses.63,64 The most common forms of glucosamine are glucosamine sulfate and glucosamine hydrochloride. The glucosamine supplements are usually made from animal sources such as crab, lobster, or shrimp shells. Glucosamine is the supplement most commonly used by patients with OA.Ref:Yuan Z.
